Why is Christmas in the Park moving?
Due to COVID-19 concerns, the event will take place at History Park in San Jose. History Park's location and footprint set up nicely for a safe and family friendly event. There isn't a safe and effective way to hold the event in Plaza de Cesar Chavez because the park is an "island" surrounded by heavy traffic. Why is Christmas in the Park not the traditional walk-through event?
Due to health concerns, the traditional event cannot be held in a manner consistent with safety guidelines, therefore for 2020, our event will convert to a drive-thru experience. Why is Christmas in the Park charging admission for the 2020 event?
Due to COVID-19, our revenue model, which relies heavily on sponsorships, vendor fees and ride revenue, is way down. The move toward an admission-based event will keep our nonprofit fiscally sound in preparation for a normal event in 2021.Will there be any options for families that cannot afford the admission price?
Mondays will be FREE admission days and families will have the option to sponsor another family. Will Christmas in the Park return to Downtown San Jose/Plaza de Cesar Chavez in 2021?
That is the current plan. Will there still be food and novelty vendors at this year's event?
We are working on having a few vendors present at this year's event. Please check back for more details. Other "amusement parks" are opening up with limited numbers of guests, why isn't Christmas in the Park doing the same?
Amusement Parks employ thousands of employees that are able to monitor social distancing. As a nonprofit organization that relies on minimal staffing and volunteers, we are unable to do the same. There are many risks involved with opening up an event to thousands of guests and for our organization pivoting our event for one year was the best way to keep our tradition alive and safe for our community. Will there still be decorated Christmas trees?
Yes! We will still have hundreds of decorated Christmas trees and all of our displays will be out as well. Will there be live entertainment on the Community Stage?
Unfortunately live entertainment (as traditionally performed at Christmas in the Park) doesn't work for a drive through event. We are, however, working on some options to enhance the overall event which could include carolers, etc. What about visits with Santa?
Santa will definately be at Christmas in the Park during select operating hours, but at this time we are not certain as to how the visit with Santa will take place. As time progresses, so will our plans, but kids, and adults, will definitely still be able to safely interact with Santa and tell him what they want for Christmas. Will there be anything new at the event?
Of course! We always try to improve upon our event each year and 2020 will be no different. We are also working on creating interactive ways to enjoy the event such as Christmas in the Park BINGO and scavenger hunts. Where is History Park?
History Park (inside San Jose's Kelley Park) is located at the intersection of Senter Road and Phelan Avenue down the street from Happy Hollow Park and Zoo and across the street from San Jose Municipal Stadium where the San Jose Giants play.
